Two Days of En Plein Air followed by a special exhibition of the artworks created at the Visitor's Center of the Salem Maritime Historic Site


FREE - For Salem Arts Members Only, All 2-D media welcome including paint, dry materials and photography.

Two Days To Paint...

The Salem Maritime Historic Site invites Salem Arts Association members to partake in two days of En Plein Air creativity during the 2018 Salem Maritime Festival, celebrating its 30th year. The festival is expected to be attended by 6 to 8 thousand visitors. 

Salem Arts members may set up on the Salem Maritime National Historic Site collection of properties during the two-day festival to be inspired, and reflect that inspiration in their artworks. 


With a Special Exhibition Opportunity...

An exhibition of the En Plein Air creations will be included in a special exhibition fo Salem Arts Members at the Visitors Center of the Salem National Maritime Historic Site where more that 4ooo people per weekend will enjoy the artworks. 


Many Opportunities for Inspiration...

The Salem Maritime National Historic Site is a National Historic Site consisting of 12 historic structures and about 9 acres of land along the waterfront of Salem Harbor in Salem, Massachusetts.

During the festival the park will also host several visiting ships, performances, historical demonstrations, and much more to inspire your creativity. 

You will also be working among visitors from all over the world which lends a lot of spontaneity to the authentic Plein Air experience. 


Eligibility:

  • You must be a current Salem Arts member.
  • Participation is FREE for both the Maritime Festival En Plein Air and the Exhibition at the Salem Visitor's Center. 
  • The artwork must have been created during the Maritime Festival En Plein Air August 4 and 5.

Registration
  • To help keep track of participants we ask for registration. this will help to send updates and exhibit information. You can also email gallery@salemarts.org to let us know you are participating or if you have any questions. 

Photographers are Welcome to Participate
  • Photographers may also have access to interior spaces of the park historic properties during regular public access. No flash photography will be permitted. 

Important Dates:  

  • En Plein Air 
    • Saturday August 4 from 8:00 am until dusk
    • Sunday August 5 from 8:00 am until 5:00 PM
  • Exhibition Take In
    • Drop off date and time will be announced. 
    • Drop off will be at the Visitors Center of the Salem National Maritime Historic Site located at 2 New Liberty Street (across from PEM)
  • Exhibition Dates
    • Wednesday August 10 through Monday September 9, 2018
  • Pick Up: Artwork will be transported to the Salem Arts Galleries for additional display through the month of September. Work can be picked up at Salem Arts on Sunday September 30, from 3-7 PM

The following guidelines will apply:
  • Please register or email gallery@salemarts.org so we can know who is participating.
  • Salem Arts Stickers will also be available to wear proudly to identify yourself as a member. 
  • You should consider protecting the grounds from your art materials with drop cloths.
  • Do not block any pedestrian pathways
  • You may use your own easels or other tools. Tables will NOT be provided. 
  • Please be prepared to bring water for use and cleanup as no facilities will be available. There is a public restroom that can provide water but you will not be permitted to use the restroom to clean up paint materials. 
  • Parking restrictions will be in place during the festival along Derby Street. Also note that surrounding streets are resident only parking. There is a nearby parking garage and limited street parking nearby. Be prepared to cary your materials to your desired location. 
  • It would be a good idea to visit the site and look for your inspiration in advance. 

Art Exhibit:

There will special exhibition of the art work created to be hosted at the Salem Regional Visitor's Center at 2 New Liberty Street. That exhibition will be on display August 8 through September 3. 

Following this exhibition the entire exhibit will be moved to the Salem Arts Galleries at The Bridge at 211 (211 Bridge Street) where it can be viewed through the month of September.

All participating En Plein Air artists are invited to join in the exhibition to be held at Salem Regional Visitor's Center at 2 New Liberty Street. 

  • Exhibition entries will be voted for peoples choice during the exhibition. 
  • Art drop-off: 
      • Drop off date and time will be announced. 
      • Drop off will be at the Visitors Center of the Salem National Maritime Historic Site located at 2 New Liberty Street (across from PEM)
  • All work for exhibition be wired and ready for wall hanging. 
  • All submissions must be dry and ready to display.  
  • Sales will be managed through the Salem Arts Association shop. A 20% commission will apply to all sales. 


Insurance:  

The Salem Maritime Historic Site and Salem Arts are not responsible for any property loss or damage.  Artists must provide their own insurance if they wish additional coverage.
