Paint landscapes: Push Limits, Take Risks, Have Fun

Deepen your relationship with artistic process - enjoy freedom, energy, irreverence and push limits, allowing discovery by interpreting the landscape through color, composition and mark-making. Enjoy an energized and nurturing environment to explore and enhance your creative intelligence. Bring your favorite landscape photo reference and supplies in the medium of your choice (oils, acrylics etc) to reframe how you see the world in a thoroughly contemporary way.

This class will be presented by artist Patricia Burson. 

Patricia Burson grew up in Montclair, NJ in a lively artistic atmosphere. She earned her BFA from Carnegie-Mellon, and did post graduate work at CMU, Mass College of Art and Design, the Museum School of the MFA. 

After college, Ms.Burson started “Woolworks” in Pittsburgh, and later “Loomatics” in Charleston, WV which produced large fiber sculptures and wearable art which she exhibited at the Carnegie Museum, the Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, and sold through boutique gallery stores in New York and Boca Raton, FL. 

Ms. Burson moved to Boston in 1986 and maintains a large studio in Salem, MA. She uses painting and drawing media in innovative ways to create land and seascapes that play with process and flow from her passion for the natural environment. 

Whether you are a beginner or advanced artist, all levels will benefit from this workshop.

MATERIALS LIST

If you already have your own methods and paints I’m happy to work around your preferences. You are welcome to bring any supplies you feel most comfortable with. The list below is for oils.

PAINTS (oils or acrylics):

• Titanium White,

Recommended Oil Brands

• Utrecht Store Brand, Dick Blick, Gamblin, Williamsburg, (stay away from student grade)
  
• A variety of brushes of different sizes including bright #8, #12. House brushes are ok.
  
• several different palette knives
  
• Thinner: Odorless mineral spirits – only Gamsol by Gamblin. Everything else has a strong odor.
  
• Oil Medium: 1/3 Linseed, 1/3 OMS (Gamsol), 1/3 Stand
  
• A few masonite or canvas panels (9x12, 8x10, 11x14) primed with either acrylic or oil
  
• (Sourcetek, Raymar and others are Xne – avoid Fedrix if possible).
  
• A portable painting easel or pochade kit. Guerilla box or The French HALF Easel are good.
  
• Also Open Box M which requires a tripod. I use the Velbon DF-40 which is very lightweight
  

Additional Supplies

• Paper towels
  
• Disposable palette (stay wet palettes not recommended)
  
• Spray bottle for water (for acrylic only - a travel sized hairspray bottle is recommended)
  
• Empty container for water to wash brushes in – plastic peanut butter jars with tight lids are good
