Artist Bio or Résumé
Derek Jones has used various mediums throughout the past decades and centers on the notion of arbitrary objects being captivating and curiosity-inducing. Nature, urban life and industrial contexts are presented with the use of metal and concrete form, paint, and photographs. Themes often include present day and historial social justice observations as well as everyday life through an abstract lens. Architecture and urban scenes are commonly seen with the natural world often encroaching. This gives the viewer a glimpse into what can be or what could be if certain circumstances prevail. The artist also depicts the joy and beauty of everyday life that can easily be overlooked.
Artist Statement
In seeing our world as an ever changing and dynamic construct, I use my artwork to convey the mundane into something to be observed. Using metalwork and concrete, I can create permanent structures to relay this institution of beauty and give a quality of both stillness and motion. Of both permanence and change. Through photographs I aim to transmit to the viewer a sense of normalcy in an abnormal world with nature being fully observed within an urban and industrial setting. With my artwork, I relay this definitive relationship that we can observe daily.
