salemJazzandSoulLogo.jpgIt will be a swinging, rocking night at the Peabody Essex Museum on Saturday evening, April 18, from 8 p.m. to midnight as the Salem Jazz and Soul Festival holds their third spring gala. The event, Big Band Blues: A Benefit for the Salem Jazz and Soul Festival, features a concert with The Boston Horns Big Band with special guests Barrence Whitfield, James Montgomery and Toni Lynn Washington. The night will be hosted by local radio personality, Holly Harris, host of the internet radio show Ultimate Blues Radio.

Blues harmonica legend James Montgomery is a vital presence and one of the most dynamic performers on the scene. Over the years he has performed and recorded with legends in the music scene including Kid Rock, Gregg Allman and many other stars.  Toni Lynn Washington is a soulful singer who has toured internationally and performed at famed venues such as the Chicago Blues Festival and the Newport Jazz Festival.  Her honors include seven WC Handy National Blues Award nominations including "Soul-Blues Female Performer of the Year."

Barrence Whitfield has performed with artists like Bo Diddley, Tina Turner, George Thorogood, Robert Cray, Los Lobos, Taj Mahal, Richard Thompson and many more.  Recently he was featured on the soundtrack to the
film "The Honeydripper" starring Danny Glover. The Boston Horns Big Band boasts some of the cream of the crop Boston musicians, and plays modern virtuoso big band jazz mixed with be-bop, swing and Latin favorites. Local singer Kimberly Mantz of Beverly will also perform a few songs

The evening is sponsored by Tache Real Estate. The concert benefits the third annual  Salem Jazz and Soul Festival coming once again this August to the Salem Willows. As in previous years, plans call for a week-long Festival of events and performances in clubs and restaurants in the city in mid-August.

Proceeds from the night will support the Festival's mission to support music education programs and provide free concerts for the public. Tickets for the Spring Fundraiser are $50 per person or $45 for PEM members.
