The Salem Arts Association (SAA) is happy to announce that it will be exhibiting and selling artwork at Artists' Row in Salem, MA, for the 2012 season.

SALEM, MA—For yet another year, visitors to Salem Artists' Row will be able to enjoy exceptional art and fine crafts presented by the Salem Arts Association (SAA). Located at 24 New Derby Street in Salem, MA, between Front Street and Derby Street, Artists' Row is made up of four buildings, open seasonally to artist vendors. The SAA retail shop and gallery at Artists' Row will be open from May 24 to October 31 2012. The retail shop will be selling work by SAA members all season. Each month, the SAA Gallery will display works based on a different theme:

ART IS FOR THE BIRDS – AND CATS & DOGS

Local artists called to create and donate birdhouses for Northeast Animal Shelter

SALEM, Mass. (April 2012) Salem’s collection of community minded stores, Roost, The Beehive and Scrub, locally owned by Kate Leavy and Jamie Metsch, are hosting their 2^ndAnnual Gimme Shelter Birdhouse Auction on June 3, 2012, with all proceeds benefiting the Northeast Animal Shelter (NEAS).

Local artists are invited to submit their original take on the classic birdhouse to be displayed and auctioned to the public at the event held at Roost’s 40 Front Street location. Ideally, the birdhouses should be functional as well as decorative, but no design restrictions apply except they need to fit through the door.

Want to donate a birdhouse creation for this very worthy cause? Contact us with your intent to submit by May 1^st, 2012 to be included in promotional materials. Completed birdhouses must be received no later than May 20^th, 2012.

The Salem Theatre Company is producing Jeffrey Hatcher’s A PICASSO for an April 26 – May 19 production run. We are in need of a bout 40 canvasses of various sizes to dress the set. Any art on the canvasses will not be seen by the audience as they will be stacked against a wall.

We will need the canvasses sometime the week of April 16 and return them the week of May 20.

If you have a few canvasses that we may borrow for the run, please let Gary LaParl know by e-mailing: gary@salemtheatre.com. He’ll arrange pick-up or delivery.

Salem Arts Association is joining Salem Main Streets June 1st, 2nd and 3rd for the Salem Arts Festival.

The Salem Arts Association will be organizing the Juried Art Exhibition in the Old Town Hall. Juried Individuals and groups will share their culinary, visual arts, literary, music, and performing talents with Salem inside and outside.

The Salem Arts Association Announces "Photo Salem: A Group Show of Professional Photography"

The Salem Arts Association (SAA) is pleased to announce Photo Salem: A Group Show of Professional Photography, sponsored by the SAA and the waterfront business center, Shetland Park.

SALEM, MA—Photo Salem will be on view in the second floor Atrium of Building One at Shetland Park in the Small Business Center at 27 Congress Street in Salem from Friday, March 16 2012 to Saturday, June 30 2012. Visiting hours are 9 a.m.–6 p.m., Monday–Saturday. Each SAA member photographer participating in Photo Salem will present a small collection of their work.

From March 16 to June 13, Shetland Arts: A Group Exhibition of Photography and Sculpture will be on view at Shetland Park concurrently with Photo Salem. The Shetland Arts exhibition will be on the first floor of the Atrium of Building One, just below Photo Salem.

Shetland Park will sponsor a joint opening for Shetland Arts and Photo Salem on March 16, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Salem Arts Association will hold a reception on May 31, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

City of Salem Calls for Submissions to ArtBox 2012

Winners to Receive Significant Visibility & $500 dollars

Utility to Beauty

The City of Salem calls all artists to submit proposals to paint one out of six downtown utility boxes as part of ArtBox 2012. Winning artists will have their work in front of one million people annually and will receive $500.

With the recent announcement of the Peabody Essex Museum’s pending expansion and last year’s successful Rob Lorenson sculpture series, the city is on the rise as a regional, national and international arts destination.

In the hopes of promoting individual artists as well as the community’s burgeoning arts scene, ArtBox asks all interested to propose a piece of art that presents his or her visual interpretation of Salem’s cityscape, culture, community pride or art itself.

Project Background

Salem’s first art box, located on Essex Street in front of its sponsor’s popular café, has been received very positively. Inspired by its success and the city’s increased artistic momentum, a group of local art appreciators and community leaders came together at the end of 2011 to spearhead ArtBox, a program to transform these utilitarian eyesores into original works of art.

Beyond adding to Salem’s spirit of creativity, community and innovation, these boxes are meant to beautify and inspire. If successful, ArtBox will be a perennial project. These first boxes will set the bar, generating the buzz and spurring future boxes in the coming yearsundefinedjust as painter Greg Orfanos’ vanguard box on Essex Street has done by adding a splash of creative genius to the street.

Nuts & Bolts

Open to all skilled and talented artists, the deadline for submission is Friday, April 6th. The work will be judged by an independent group of creative professionals, including Steven Zevitas, President and Publisher New American Painting and owner of the Boston-based Steven Zevitas Gallery. One box will be painted weekly starting in June.

A special thanks to local sponsors Waters & Brown Paint & Decorating for providing paint supplies and Gorilla Printing for providing a tent. Winners will be publically announced at the Salem Arts Festival on June 1.

Conditions: Entries are invited from all persons over 17 years of age. We take pride in your work: no damaged work/frames. Artists must complete the itemized inventory list of all pieces dropped off at LynnArts, Inc. NO TAGS ARE REQUIRED THIS YEAR. Any work left after the pick-up dates becomes the property of LynnArts, Inc.

Media: All 2- and 3-D media accepted (jewelry submissions must have their own display cases). Wall-mounted work must be wired for hanging. Work for bins should be shrink-wrapped or in sleeves. Only original work (no prints) will be displayed on walls. No work which has been previously displayed in this gallery will be accepted. LynnArts reserves the right to refuse any work.

Size: 24” x 36” maximum size for wall-hung pieces 18” x 24” maximum matted and shrink-wrapped size for group bins, sculpture not to exceed 25 lbs.

Quantity: maximum of 10 works per artist for paintings/sculpture; up to 4 may be wall-hung or sculptures, up to 6 may be matted and shrink-wrapped pieces (for group bins) and/or table sculptures to fit into a 2’ x 2’ space. Crafters (scarves, cards, bags) may submit up to 15 items. If in the past you have been contacted to bring more work, you may bring in up to 25 pieces.

Pricing: maximum sale price $300 per piece. 75% of retail price goes to the artist, 25% of sale price goes to LynnArts. It is our experience that affordable work sell much better; please consider submitting works under $100.

Entry fee: $15 per artist, no additional fee if more work is requested.
Drop-off dates: November 7, 8, 9, 11 10am-4pm, November 10, 10am-7pm, November 12, 11am-4pm.
Pick-up dates for unsold work: January 5 (10am-7pm), January 6 (10am-4pm), and January 7 (11am-4pm)
